Another Busy Week at The Creek

This week has been filled with all types of activities at RCE.  Routines are in place and students are busy learning.

Monday Night we had the Watchdog meeting.  It's so exciting to have the watchdogs back on campus this year.  We start with our first Watch Dogs on Tuesday.  The students are looking forward to having the Watch Dogs on Campus.  If you want to volunteer for the WatchDogs - check out our website and contact Chris Holmes.

On Tuesday we had one of my favorite days - Dictionary Project Day.  Every year third-grade students at RCE are given a dictionary.  This year they were sponsored by SBISD Board Members Katherine Dawson and Chris Gonazlez.  I love watching the students as they peruse the dictionaries - they look up words, they see maps and statistics.  One of the best things is when they find the sign language section - they start practicing their signing.  They are so proud of their new dictionaries.
Here's a video of the presentation.

Tuesday night was Odyssey of the Mind Information Meeting.  We had a lot of parents show up and the students were given time to try some spontaneous activities.  Odyssey of the Mind gives children a chance to explore and create.  Check out the website for more information or contact Helen He.

On Wednesday morning, several parents, students, and teachers joined together for See You at the Pole prayer time.  If ever there was a year that RCE needs prayer, this is it.  Seeing our parents and students come together to pray for each other is a strong statement.  Just because See You at the Pole is over, don't stop praying for RCE students and the RCE community.

Friday we were without custodial help.  Two of our custodians left ill, and one of them retired....she even missed her own retirement celebration.  Kerry, Nancy and I had to try out the vac to make sure we could clean up the school.  We may try the Japanese school model where students help clean the building every day!  Just having fun learning a new piece of equipment (yet one we use daily at home!)  Love our flexibility!

Student Council has begun with lots of GREAT ideas.  Our first project is a food drive for the Spring Branch Food Pantry.  By having this food drive, we will provide 40 Thanksgiving dinners and food vouchers for our sister school Sherwood.  Student Council members have created two videos to motivate students to bring food for the pantry.
We are also collecting plastic bags from stores and socks for the homeless.  Send any of these items to school with your children.
Our challenge is for each child to bring one can of food.  The drive begins on Monday and continues through October 13th.  Thank you for your generous donations to the Spring Branch Food Pantry.

Looking to the future at RCE -

Thursday morning is Donuts with Dad - come for a nutritious start to our Thursday!
Thursday evening is Open House- a time for parents to come and learn about what goes on in their child's classroom all day.
We will start Open House with an optional session on using On-Line Resources available from the library.  Drop in the library for a quick look at what we have to offer you 24/7 to support your children.

We are so fortunate to have been selected by the Barbara Bush Foundation to be part of the Harvey Relief of My Home Library.  Students at RCE, and other schools along the Memorial corridor have been selected to receive books for students to rebuild personal home libraries.  How exciting.
We have also been fortunate to have a school in Pennsylvania collect books for our students.  These books will be distributed sometime in October.  It will be wonderful for our students to be able to rebuild personal libraries.

We will have a small book fair in November just in time for holiday shopping.

Teachers are looking forward to two days of training.

Have a great week!  See you back next week!
